What Is Sangria?

Sangria is a popular alcoholic beverage that originated in Spain and is now enjoyed worldwide. It is typically made by combining red or white wine with chopped fruit, sweeteners, and sometimes additional spirits or carbonated beverages. The mixture is then chilled before serving.

What Is Sangria Made Of?

The basic ingredients of a traditional red sangria recipe include:

  1. Wine: Red wine, such as Rioja or Tempranillo, is commonly used as the base for red sangria. However, you can experiment with different varieties and blends to suit your taste.

  2. Fruit: Chopped or sliced fruits are added to the wine mixture to infuse flavors and provide a refreshing touch. Common fruits used in red sangria include oranges, lemons, apples, and berries.

  3. Sweeteners: A sweetener like sugar, simple syrup, or honey is often added to balance the tartness of the wine and fruit. The amount of sweetener used can vary depending on personal preference.

  4. Spirits: Some recipes include additional spirits to enhance the flavor and alcohol content. Brandy or orange liqueur, such as triple sec or Cointreau, are popular choices.

  5. Carbonated Beverage (optional): To add a bubbly element, some variations of sangria include a splash of soda water, sparkling water, or lemon-lime soda just before serving.

What is the Best White Wine to Make Sangria?

For white sangria, the base wine is typically a light-bodied white wine, such as a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, and the fruit selection may differ, often including peaches, melons, or citrus fruits.

    How To Serve Sangria

Once the ingredients are combined, the sangria is usually refrigerated for a few hours or overnight to allow the flavors to meld together. It is traditionally served over ice in a glass, with the fruit pieces acting as a garnish. Sangria is a popular choice for social gatherings, parties, or as a refreshing drink on warm days.

Why you’ll love this easy peach sangria recipe…

The thing that makes the best drinks for summer is using fresh fruit. This white wine sangria uses ripe peaches, which are some of my favourite summer fruits. What’s also great about this blueberry peach sangria recipe is that you can use frozen peaches. It will even keep the drink colder, and longer.

Personally, I feel like this white peach sangria is a lot more refreshing than a red wine sangria, which is the traditional sangria recipe. Don’t get me wrong, I do love a red sangria. It’s perfect for all of your summer parties since you don’t even need to use expensive wine. All you need is a bottle of pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc, or sparkling white wine for a sparkling peach sangria. Feel free to use anything you have on hand or any other favorite.

Trust me, if you are looking for the perfect summer drink, look no further…

For the flavours to infuse, I suggest adding the fruit, vodka, and wine in advance and letting chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour.

When you are ready to serve this delicious cocktail, simply top up with soda water

What you’ll need to make this blueberry sangria recipe…

    • 1/2 cup of fresh blueberries

    • 1 cup of peach slices

    • 1 lime, sliced + extra lime slices for garnish

    • 1 bottle of white wine, chilled

    • 1 cup of Vodka

    • 1 cup of Peach juice or peach nectar

    • sparkling water

    • ice cubes

    • fresh mint for garnish, optional

How to make this easy summer cocktail…

    1. In a large pitcher, combine the cup of blueberries, peach slices, lime, vodka, and bottle of wine. Let chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour if you can. You want to give a chance for the lime, peach, and blueberry flavor to infuse.

    2. When ready to serve, add in the peach juice and stir.

    3. Top with soda water and then fill each wine glass or any other glass of your choice with a handful of ice. Pour and serve immediately

I decided to go with a bottle of Pinot Grigio since it tends to have lemon and lime notes, but also a floral aroma. I thought it would pair perfectly with the blueberries, peaches, and limes used for this recipe.

Can sangria be made ahead of time?

Yes, sangria can be made ahead of time. In fact, making sangria in advance allows the flavors to blend together and develop, resulting in a more flavorful beverage. By preparing it ahead, you can save time and have the sangria ready to serve when needed. Here are some tips for making sangria ahead of time:

    1. Prepare the base: Combine the wine, fruit, sweeteners, and any additional spirits in a pitcher or container. Mix everything well to ensure the flavors are evenly distributed.

    2. Let it chill: Once the sangria is mixed, cover the pitcher or container and refrigerate it. It’s recommended to let it chill for at least a few hours, or even overnight, to allow the fruits to infuse their flavors into the wine.

    3. Add carbonation (if desired) before serving: If you plan to include a carbonated element like soda water or sparkling water, it’s best to add it just before serving. This helps to retain the fizziness and prevents it from going flat while it sits in the refrigerator.

    4. Garnish and serve: Before serving, give the sangria a good stir to ensure the fruits are evenly distributed. You can also add fresh fruit slices or herbs as a garnish for an extra touch. Serve the sangria over ice in glasses, making sure each serving has a good amount of fruit pieces.

Keep in mind that the fruit pieces may start to soften and lose their texture if the sangria is left in the refrigerator for too long. Therefore, it’s generally recommended to consume the sangria within a couple of days of preparing it.

By making sangria ahead of time, you not only save time but also allow the flavors to meld together, resulting in a more flavorful and enjoyable drink.
