What does grilled watermelon taste like?

Grilled watermelon tastes sweet and smoky with a juicy, tender texture. The grilling process caramelizes the natural sugars in the fruit and enhances its sweetness, while also adding a smoky flavor from the grill. The end result is a slightly charred, sweet, and delicious fruit that is perfect for salads or as a side dish. Grilled watermelon can also take on the flavor of any seasonings or marinades you add to it, making it a versatile ingredient in many dishes.

Instructions:

  1. In a small saucepan, bring the balsamic vinegar to a boil over medium-high heat.
  2. Reduce heat to medium-low and let it simmer for about 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until it thickens and reduces by about half.
  3. Add the brown sugar and continue to simmer for another 5 minutes, until the mixture thickens further into a syrup-like consistency.
  4. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  5. The glaze will thicken further as it cools.

How to make this grilled watermelon salad…

  1. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.

  2. On a cutting board, cut your watermelon into 2-inch-thick slices.

  3. Place watermelon wedges between paper towels to absorb some of the water content. Sometimes I’ll even let them sit for a few minutes on a baking sheet.

  4. Once you remove the excess juices from your watermelon, brush the top and bottom of your watermelon slices with olive oil, and season with a bit of salt and pepper.

  5. Add to the hot grill and grill watermelon on each side for 3-4 minutes, or until you have the perfect grill marks

  6. Plate your watermelon on top of a bed or arugula salad (optional), and sprinkle some feta cheese, red onion slices, chopped mint, and almonds.

  7. Drizzle each plate with honey and a very light drizzle of olive oil. Serve immediately.

Should I wash a watermelon before cutting it?

Yes, it’s recommended to wash a watermelon before cutting it. This helps to remove any dirt or residue that may have accumulated on the surface of the fruit. Washing the watermelon also helps to reduce the risk of transferring bacteria from the surface to the inside of the fruit, especially if you’re going to eat the watermelon raw. To wash a watermelon, simply run it under warm water and gently scrub the surface with a clean cloth or brush.

How do I cut a watermelon into triangles?

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to cut a watermelon into triangles:

  1. Wash the watermelon and dry it thoroughly.
  2. Cut off both ends of the watermelon to create flat surfaces.
  3. Stand the watermelon up on one of the cut ends.
  4. Slice the watermelon in half lengthwise.
  5. Cut each half of the watermelon in half again lengthwise.
  6. Cut each quarter into triangular slices by making diagonal cuts.
  7. Use a knife to remove the rind from each slice, if desired.
  8. Enjoy your watermelon triangles!

You can adjust the thickness of the slices based on your preference. I suggest cutting them into 2-inch-thick slices.
