Where to start when choosing dinnerware? I’ve been asked this question frequently in the last few months, especially after posting about my Blue & White inspired table setting. It also seems like people are moving and transitioning into new homes and looking to be more mindful about their items for their houses.

The good news is that you don’t need multiple sets to achieve that curated collection, as long as you know what you look for.

Setting a nice table for yourself or your guests is never something that should be overlooked. A beautiful table setting is something that will elevate your dining experience; for you and your guests. It has been proven to directly affect the enjoyment of the meal.

Selecting your dinnerware is quite simple. Here are a few tips for when you are adding new dishes, or even if you are just starting your collection.

How many sets of dishes do I need?

You only need one. Start by investing in one set of good quality dishes that can be used every day, but can be dressed up for formal dining. I suggest going with a classic white. That way it will go with ANYTHING. It can easily be dressed up with nice table linens, placemats and extra serving pieces.

White dishes are key. Food looks great on it, it’s classic and elegant and will never go out of style. That way you are investing in a set that will last you for years to come.

Have you never eaten off a black plate? It’s…not cute. White will also simplify mixing in new serving ware and maintain a cohesive look.

What is also important is having the right amount of settings. Going for 10-12 plates is always a good number. You might as well plan for future dinner parties, growing families and gatherings. Just think how many plates you can go through during Christmas dinner?

Adding on…

Once you have a base set of dishes, this is where you can slowly start adding on. What I did was start to purchase more formal dishes that complimented the white set. I love the blue and white combination, so that’s the colour I decided to go with.

Instead of buying a whole other set of dishes, I started shopping for open stock dinnerware. Then I was able to only choose what I wanted to add to my collection. I didn’t want to end up with another set of mugs and soup bowls, so I only purchased dinner and salad plates for example.

Is it worth investing in?

Yes. It is. If you buy a set of dishes, you are going to want it to last. If you take good care of them, they can last you for life. Now, I’m not saying go out and buy an expensive set of china, but looking for quality is important. Here is a quick breakdown of what I suggest you look for:

Bone China

These dishes are very durable….and lightweight. They are usually microwavable and dishwasher safe and the best part; is they are chip resistant. It’s the strongest range of china, so worth the investment.

Porcelain

These dishes are microwave, dishwasher and can also be oven safe. They are also very durable, but many styles of porcelain sets have metal detailing around the rim that would then not make them safe for the microwave.

Melamine

If you have young ones in the home, this is a fantastic option for you. Forget plastic, melamine is way more durable and looks way better than any plastic dish set you’ll find. Perfect for indoors and outdoors, melamine dishes won’t chip and are shatterproof. The only downside is that these will have to be hand washed. No to be used in the microwave either….sorry!

Stoneware

Probably my favourite, stoneware is perfect for the whole family. They tend to be very durable, heavy and will last forever if well maintained. The only downside of stoneware is that they are usually can only be hand washed. These dishes often tend to be hand-painted, so you; ’ll want to care for those if you want the beautiful designs to last.

Curate a collection

Your table setting should be as unique as you are. Don’t be afraid to mix and match with new pieces that catch your eye. Introduce new textures, colours and sizes. While you can often find great deals in big box stores, have a look at antique and thrift stores. Not only is it a more sustainable option, but you will find unique treasures that will wow your guests.
