This pumpkin sauce recipe is the perfect alternative to tomato sauce, and with it being pumpkin season, it’s the perfect way to take advantage of the seasonal flavours.

My favorite way to use this creamy pumpkin pasta sauce recipe is to make a pasta bake, which I’ll be sharing soon. But this easy pumpkin sauce can be used just as you would an alfredo sauce or marinara sauce! If you are using canned pumpkin, make sure to get 100% pure pumpkin puree, and not pumpkin pie mix. We want this sauce to have a savoury flavor, and we don’t want to get pumpkin spices and sweetness with this sauce.

  • 15 oz of canned pumpkin, 100% pure pumpkin purée
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp of kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp of black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp of red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 cup of heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup of chicken broth
  • a handful of fresh herbs, like fresh sage leaves, thyme or rosemary.
  • 1 cup of grated parmesan cheese

How to make this recipe a vegan pumpkin pasta sauce…

This recipe is so adaptable and can easily be made vegan and vegetarian-friendly. Simply replace the chicken stock with vegetable stock. Then swap out the parmesan cheese for nutritional yeast and leave you the heavy cream and replace it with a non-dairy alternative. I used unsweetened almond milk and it turned out great! If you want this recipe to be more decadent, use full-fat coconut milk for a gorgeous texture and delicious sauce.

How to make Creamy Pumpkin Pasta Sauce…

  1. Combine all of your ingredients in a blender or food processor.
  2. Blend for 1 minute, or until the blended sauce is smooth and has a creamy texture.
  3. Taste and add additional salt if needed.

What to do with Pumpkin Pasta Sauce…

Use this sauce as you would a marinara sauce. Warm it up in a small saucepan and use it as a dipping sauce for garlic bread or mozzarella sticks. My favourite way to use this creamy pumpkin pasta sauce is to use it as a pumpkin ravioli sauce. Once your ravioli is cooked, simply warm up the sauce in a large saucepan for about 10 minutes on medium-low heat to cook the flavors, then toss in your pasta!

This sauce will also work great with any pasta variety, from shot pasta like penne pasta to al dente spaghetti or linguine.
