You can’t beat a classic Holiday recipe, and these are no exception. I have been making these butter cookies for as long as I can remember and it’s the easiest recipe out there. What’s great is that once you whip the cookies together, you can get so creative when decorating them. This time I tried something different and added colour to the dough and it turned out so cute.

They make the best cookie base if you want to add icing and are so easy to work with if you are looking to use different cookie cutter shapes. Here I used a star cookie cutter as well as a small glass to make the round ones.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup of butter, at room temperature

  • 1 tbsp of vanilla

  • 3 cups of flour

  • 1/2 cup of sugar

  • 1/2 tsp of baking powder

  • 1 egg, at room temperature

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Using a mixer, cream butter and sugar together. Add in the egg and vanilla and mix until well combined.

  2. Add in the flour gradually until well incorporated. Then add in the baking powder.

  3. Divide dough into 3 equal pieces. If you want to colour your cookies, put one of the pieces of dough back into the mixer and add a few drops of food colouring. Mix and add more food colouring until you reach the desired colour. Repeat with other pieces of dough per colour.

  4. Shape the pieces of dough into a ball and place them in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes. This will help firm up the dough and make it so much easier for cookie cutting.

  5. Preheat oven to 350F degrees.

  6. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut out as many cookies as possible with your dough.

  7. Bake cookies for about 10-12 minutes until edges start to turn slightly golden. The less time they cook, the softer.
