Classic Italian Homemade Marinara Sauce

This delicious marinara sauce is one of my favorite pasta sauces. This homemade sauce uses red pepper flakes, fresh tomatoes, fresh basil, garlic cloves for a delicious marinara sauce. You can also used canned tomatoes for this for this easy classic sauce. Perfect with your favorite pasta with some parmesan cheese and fresh parsley. Even perfect as a pizza sauce paired with a glass for red wine.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup onion diced
  • 3 cloves of garlic minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil chopped
  • 1/2 tbsp dried oregano
  • 1 can whole tomatoes 28 oz
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes 28 oz
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 2 tbsp pesto
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  • In a large pot, heat your oil on medium high heat. Add your onions, garlic and carrots until soft (about 5-6 minutes).
  • Add in your cans of tomatoes and break up the whole tomatoes with a wooden spoon. If you like more of a rustic sauce, you can leave it chunky. But it you want a smoother sauce, break up the tomatoes as much as you can.
  • Stir in the remaining of your ingredients and mix well. Let the sauce simmer on reduced heat for about 20-25 minutes, stirring every few minutes.
