Simple Detox Drink

Ginger has easily become one of my favourite kitchen ingredients. While I don’t use it much in actual meals, I have been incorporating it into my health and wellness regime regularly (like a detox bath which I will get to in a later post).

Ginger has so many medicinal benefits and I wish I had explored this spice long ago. It is a great source of vitamin A, C, E and B Complex. It also is a source of potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, beta-carotene and even calcium!

It doesn’t end there…

It also has anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial, anti-nausea, and antiviral properties that can help treat a variety of health issues.

You can incorporate Ginger in many different ways, but drinking Ginger tea or a Ginger water concoction is the best way to maximize effectiveness. Both of these are so simple and can be made a home with very few ingredients.  The following recipe makes 6 servings.

All you need is:

  • 4 cups of water and a medium saucepan

  • 3 to 4-inch piece of Ginger root

  • 1 lemon

  • (optional) 1 tablespoon of honey, maple syrup or agave nectar

Directions:

  • Peel the Ginger root. I use a vegetable peeler to make it way faster

  • Slice the Ginger into thin slices

  • Bring your pot of water to a boil

  • Add pieces of Ginger and simmer on low (uncovered) for 15 minutes

  • Remove from heat and let the water cool

  • Once at room temperature, add slices of lemon and stir

  • Let sit for another few minutes and strain to remove Ginger pieces and lemon.

  • (optional: sweeten with honey, maple syrup or agave nectar)

Store your Ginger water in mason jars and refrigerate. A batch of this usually makes about 3 standard mason jars and half of a mason jar is a suggested serving. I suggest starting with drinking half the mason jar in the morning and then incorporating the second serving before bed after a few days of introducing Ginger & Lemon water into your diet. If you experience excess gas or diarrhea, reduce your servicing. Keep in mind your body is detoxing so these cleansing symptoms are normal. If you start having abdominal pain or heartburn, discontinue use.

To recap, below are the known benefits of incorporating Ginger into your daily diet:

  • decrease inflammation in the body

  • decrease and prevent nausea

  • protect the body from free radicals

  • boost immune system

  • boost energy

  • improve digestion

  • boost metabolism

  • improve blood circulation

  • ease menstrual discomforts

  • fights respiratory infections

  • reduce cholesterol levels
