This easy apple smoothie is creamy, naturally sweet, and made with just a handful of everyday ingredients. Fresh apple, quick oats, dates, honey, and milk blend together into a simple breakfast or snack with warm apple-and-cinnamon flavorāand there’s no banana required.
I especially love the oats here. They give the smoothie a little more body without overpowering the fresh apple, while the dates add a subtle caramel-like sweetness. Add peanut butter, protein powder, chia seeds, or hemp seeds when you want to make it a little more substantial.

A Little About This Recipe
Apples are one of those ingredients I almost always have in the kitchen. And while I love apple season for baking, there are plenty of mornings when turning on the oven isn’t happening.
That’s when I make this smoothie.
I wanted a simple apple smoothie that actually tasted like appleānot one where the apple disappears behind banana, yogurt, or a long list of other fruit.
Quick oats were the answer. They make the smoothie creamy, dates bring sweetness and depth, and a little cinnamon gives you that cozy apple flavor without turning breakfast into dessert.
It’s exactly the kind of recipe I love: affordable ingredients, one blender, five minutes, and plenty of room to make it your own.

Why I Love This Apple Smoothie Recipe
The first thing I love about this recipe is how simple it is.
- You don’t need frozen banana, yogurt, or frozen fruit. That makes it particularly useful when you want an apple smoothie without banana or simply don’t have a freezer full of smoothie ingredients.
- The oats give it body, the dates make it naturally rich and slightly caramel-like, and milk helps everything blend into a creamy consistency.
- It’s also easy to customize. I can keep it simple for a snack, add peanut butter when I want something richer, or add protein powder, chia seeds, or hemp seeds when I’m making it for breakfast.
And because the apple isn’t competing with several other fruits, you actually taste the apple.
Apple Smoothie Ingredients
1 apple, cored and diced
The apple is the star, so choose one you enjoy eating.
For a sweeter smoothie, I like Honeycrisp, Fuji, Gala, or Pink Lady apples. For a more tart green apple smoothie, Granny Smith is a wonderful choice.
You don’t necessarily need to peel your apple. I generally leave the peel on when using a good blender because it saves time and keeps the recipe simple.
Always remove the core and seeds before blending.
¼ cup quick oats
Quick oats are my favorite trick for giving this smoothie more body.
Because they’re thinner than old-fashioned rolled oats, they break down easily in the blender and create a creamier texture.
They also give the smoothie a subtle apple-oatmeal flavor that feels especially good for breakfast.
1 tablespoon honey
A little honey rounds out the tartness of the apple.
Apple varieties vary quite a bit in sweetness, so always taste the smoothie before deciding whether you want more.
2 pitted dates
Dates give the smoothie another layer of sweetness and a subtle caramel flavor that works beautifully with apple and cinnamon.
Make absolutely sure they’re pitted before they go into the blender.
If your dates are particularly firm or dry and you don’t have a high-powered blender, soak them briefly in warm water before blending.
½ cup milk
Use whatever milk you normally keep at home.
Dairy milk creates a creamy smoothie, but almond milk, oat milk, soy milk, or another unsweetened plant-based milk all work well.
I usually start with the measured ½ cup and only add more if the smoothie needs help blending.
Pinch of cinnamon, for garnish
Apple and cinnamon are an obvious pair for good reason.
A little cinnamon makes the smoothie taste warmer and cozier without covering up the fresh fruit.
I like to blend in a small pinch and add another dusting over the top before serving.

Optional Add-Ins
The basic recipe is intentionally simple, but this is where you can make it work for your morning.
1 tablespoon peanut butter
Add peanut butter for richness and a creamy, nutty flavor.
Apple and peanut butter are already one of my favorite snack combinations, so they work naturally together in smoothie form.
Almond butter is an easy substitute.
Protein powder
Add your favorite protein powder according to the package serving size.
Depending on the powder, you may need a splash more milk because protein powder can significantly thicken a smoothie.
Chia seeds
Add 1 to 2 teaspoons chia seeds.
Keep in mind that chia continues absorbing liquid as it sits, so the smoothie will become thicker over time.
Hemp seeds
Add 1 tablespoon hemp seeds.
They blend easily and have a mild, slightly nutty flavor.
Substitutions and Variations
Make a Green Apple Smoothie
Use one Granny Smith or another tart green apple.
Because green apples are less sweet than varieties such as Fuji or Honeycrisp, taste after blending and adjust the honey if needed.
Make It Dairy-Free
Use unsweetened almond milk, soy milk, or oat milk.
For an apple smoothie with almond milk, substitute it cup-for-cup for dairy milk.
Use Maple Syrup Instead of Honey
Replace the honey with maple syrup.
Maple and apple are especially lovely together and give the smoothie an even more autumnal flavor.
Make an Apple Banana Smoothie
If you happen to have a frozen banana, add about ½ banana.
You’ll get a thicker, sweeter apple banana smoothie with less prominent apple flavor.
You may also want to reduce or omit the honey because the banana contributes additional sweetness.
Add More Spice
For more of an apple-pie flavor, add a small pinch of nutmeg or ground ginger along with the cinnamon.
I keep these spices restrained. I still want the smoothie to taste fresh rather than like liquid potpourri.
Add Vanilla
A splash of vanilla extract makes the apple, dates, and cinnamon taste a little more dessert-like.
Make It With Water
You can make an apple smoothie with water, although it won’t be as creamy.
Start with slightly less than ½ cup cold water and add more as needed.
If I’m using water, I especially like adding peanut or almond butter for extra body.
Add Ice
For a colder, thicker drink, add a handful of ice after the first blend and blend again.
Don’t add too much. Ice can quickly dilute the apple flavor.

How to Make an Apple Smoothie
1. Prepare the Apple
Wash the apple well.
Remove the core and seeds, then dice the apple into small chunks.
If your blender isn’t especially powerful, smaller pieces will blend more easily.
2. Add the Ingredients to the Blender
Add the milk first.
Then add the diced apple, quick oats, dates, and honey.
Starting with liquid near the blades helps everything move more efficiently through the blender.
3. Blend Until Smooth
Blend on high until completely smooth and creamy.
The exact time depends on your blender, but I usually let it run long enough that there are no noticeable pieces of apple skin or date remaining.
Stop and scrape down the sides if needed.
If the smoothie is too thick, add another splash of milk.
4. Taste
Taste before pouring.
This is particularly important with an apple smoothie because different apples have dramatically different sweetness levels.
If it needs more sweetness, add a little honey or maple syrup.
If it’s too sweet, a splash more milk can balance it.
5. Serve
Pour into a glass and finish with a pinch of cinnamon.
I like this smoothie best immediately while the texture is creamy and the apple flavor tastes fresh.
Expert Tips for the Best Apple Smoothie
Choose the Apple Based on the Flavor You Want
- Your apple variety matters more here than it would in a smoothie with several different fruits.
- Honeycrisp, Fuji, Gala, and Pink Lady give you a sweeter smoothie.
- Granny Smith creates a much more tart green apple smoothie.
Don’t Automatically Peel the Apple
- If you have a reasonably strong blender, try leaving the peel on.
- It’s one less preparation step, and once properly blended, I don’t mind the texture at all.
- If your blender struggles with fibrous ingredientsāor you simply prefer a completely silky smoothieāpeeling the apple is perfectly fine.
Put the Milk in First
- Blender order sounds like a small detail, but it genuinely helps.
- Liquid closest to the blades creates movement that helps pull the apple, oats, and dates downward.
- This is especially useful if you aren’t using a high-powered blender.
Soak Dry Dates
- Fresh, soft dates blend very easily.
- Older, firmer dates can leave little pieces behind. If yours feel dry, cover them with warm water for about 5 to 10 minutes, drain, and then blend.
Give the Oats Enough Time to Blend
- Quick oats disappear beautifully into smoothies, but don’t stop the blender too early.
- A properly blended smoothie should taste creamy rather than gritty.
Add Extra Ingredients After Testing the Basic Recipe
- I always like tasting a recipe before loading it up with additions.
- Make the basic apple smoothie once. Then decide whether it needs peanut butter, protein powder, chia, hemp, or anything else for your needs.
How to Store Leftover Apple Smoothie
This smoothie tastes best immediately after blending.
- Fresh apple naturally begins to oxidize after it’s cut, so the color and flavor will gradually change.
- If you have leftovers, transfer them to an airtight jar and refrigerate for up to 24 hours.
- Some separation is normal. Shake the jar well or briefly re-blend before drinking.
- I wouldn’t make several days’ worth of finished smoothie at once. Instead, prep the ingredients ahead and blend each serving fresh.

How to Make an Apple Smoothie Ahead
- For busy mornings, I like prepping everything except the apple and milk.
- Measure the quick oats and dates into your blender cup or a small container the night before. Have your optional chia, hemp seeds, or protein powder ready too.
- In the morning, all you have to do is core and chop the apple, add milk and honey, and blend.
- You can also freeze cored apple chunks ahead of time. A frozen apple will make the smoothie thicker and colder, so you may need slightly more milk to help everything blend.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you put an apple in a smoothie?
Absolutely. Fresh apples blend very well in smoothies, especially when they’re cut into chunks first. Remove the core and seeds, add the apple to your blender with enough liquid, and blend until completely smooth.
Do you need to peel apples for smoothies?
No. I leave the peel on when my blender can break it down smoothly. If you have a less powerful blender or prefer an especially silky texture, you can peel the apple first.
What are the best apples for an apple smoothie?
For sweetness, try Honeycrisp, Fuji, Gala, or Pink Lady. For a more tart smoothie, use Granny Smith. The best apple smoothie is ultimately the one made with an apple you already enjoy eating.
Can I make an apple smoothie without banana?
Yesāthat’s exactly how this recipe is written. The quick oats and dates provide body and creaminess, so you don’t need frozen banana. This is one reason I love this simple apple smoothie recipe: the apple remains the dominant fruit flavor.
Why put oats in an apple smoothie?
Oats make the smoothie feel creamier and give it more body. Quick oats are especially convenient because they blend down easily without needing to be cooked first.
Can I make an apple smoothie with milk?
Yes. This recipe is an apple smoothie with milk, and you can use either dairy or nondairy milk depending on your preference.
Can I use almond milk?
Definitely. Unsweetened almond milk works beautifully. Oat milk and soy milk are good alternatives too.
Can I make an apple smoothie with water?
Yes, although the result won’t be quite as creamy. Replace the milk with cold water and consider adding peanut butter or almond butter if you’d like more body.
Can I add frozen banana?
Yes. Add about half a frozen banana for a thicker apple and banana smoothie. Because banana is naturally sweet, taste before adding all of the honey and dates.
Can I make this with peanut butter?
Absolutely. Add 1 tablespoon peanut butter for a richer, creamier smoothie. Apple, cinnamon, and peanut butter are especially good together.
What can I add to an apple smoothie for protein?
Protein powder is the easiest option. Depending on your diet and preferences, you could also use dairy or soy milk, Greek yogurt, peanut butter, hemp seeds, or another ingredient that contributes protein.
Can I add chia seeds?
Yes. Start with 1 to 2 teaspoons. Because chia absorbs liquid, drink the smoothie fairly soon after blending or expect it to become noticeably thicker.
Is an apple smoothie healthy?
That depends on the ingredients, portion, and your individual nutritional needs.
This recipe includes whole apple, oats, dates, and milk and can be customized with ingredients such as nuts or seeds. If you have specific nutritional goals, choose the milk and add-ins that suit those goals rather than relying on a generic āhealthyā label.
Is apple smoothie good for weight loss?
No individual food or smoothie causes weight loss on its own.
If you’re making an apple smoothie for weight loss as part of your overall eating plan, pay attention to the full recipe and portion rather than assuming that smoothies are automatically low-calorie. Adding protein or other satiating ingredients may also make a smoothie more suitable as a meal, depending on your needs.
How can I make my apple smoothie thicker?
Use less milk to start, add ice or frozen apple, or add peanut butter or chia seeds. If you like banana, frozen banana will also thicken it significantly.
Why is my apple smoothie grainy?
Usually, it simply needs more blending time. Apple skin, quick oats, and dates all need to be thoroughly broken down.
If your blender is less powerful, peel the apple, chop it more finely, and soak the dates first.
Can I make the smoothie the night before?
You can, but the color and texture will be best immediately after blending.
If you need to make it ahead, store it tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours and shake or re-blend before serving.
